Dot Number Matching
This is how the stimuli appear:
The stimuli are static pictures, the arrangement of the dots is the same for all participants as well as the presentation order (please see list below for the order presentation and stimuli display). The test offers a first practice block with 4 items (2 correct and 2 incorrect responses). If accuracy on the first practice trial is equal or below 50% (2 or less correct answers) participants will have to repeat a second practice trial with different items. The above accuracy score needs to be met on the second practice trial in order to pass, however after the second trial participants can chose to repeat the practice or advance to the test. This last practice trial can be repeated until participants are familiar with the task. There are 36 test trials in total,18 congruent (the number corresponds to the number of dots) and 18 incongruent trials (the number does not correspond to the number of dots). The first 4 items do not contribute to the final score (to allow for further adjustments of participants to familiarise with the task) so the score is calculate on the last 32 trials. Stimulus presentation lasts for 2 seconds and each trial has a fixed timeout of 8 seconds. If participants respond in less than 8 second they can proceed to the next trial by pressing the space-bar. The program records accuracy and Reaction time.
- Use key presses F and J to respond, there is a reminder on each screen about which keys to press (this reminder will be different for left- and right-handed respondents).
- Only the “F” and “J” keys should be allowed to register an answer. The test should not register anything if other keys are pressed (as it does at the moment). If a wrong key is pressed, a message should display on the screen to advise.
- No discontinue or branching rules
- No “come back later” option. If a child stops the test mid-way by closing the browser, the test is abandoned (with no data recorded). The child will not be allowed to re-start the test, and in the next session, the child will move on to the next web test.
- The test should not be allowed to restart (if refresh is pressed on the web browser).
- It’s ok to restart the practice.
- Each item is to have a fixed timeout for response: 2 seconds. If a child times out on an item, this will be coded separately in the item response (e.g. 1=correspond, 2=non-correspond, 3=timed out).
